Anastrozole

Also known as Arimidex

Clinically studiedOralFDA-approved for breast cancer in postmenopausal women; use in men is off-label; prescription only; aromatase inhibitors are banned in sport (WADA, category S4)

Anastrozole is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor, a small-molecule drug rather than a peptide. It blocks the aromatase enzyme that converts androgens (including testosterone) into estrogen, thereby lowering circulating estradiol. It is FDA-approved for hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women and is used off-label in men on testosterone therapy to manage estrogen-related effects.

Studied / used for

  • Used off-label to reduce estradiol in men on testosterone therapy who have elevated estrogen
  • FDA-approved and used for hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women
  • Studied for raising testosterone in some hypogonadal men by reducing estrogen feedback

  • Hot flashes
  • Joint pain and stiffness (arthralgia)
  • Reduced bone mineral density with long-term use
