Cerebrolysin is a standardized mixture of low-molecular-weight neuropeptides and free amino acids purified from porcine brain tissue. Its low-molecular-weight fragments are proposed to cross the blood-brain barrier and mimic endogenous neurotrophic factors such as BDNF, NGF, and GDNF, supporting neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and inhibition of apoptosis. It has been studied across Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, stroke, and traumatic brain injury, with mixed and often low-quality evidence.

Studied / used for

  • studied for Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia
  • studied for ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury recovery
  • studied for neuroprotection after brain injury

Commonly reported side effects

  • injection-site reactions
  • dizziness or headache
  • agitation or feeling hot
  • nausea; some pooled analyses reported an increase in non-fatal serious adverse events in acute ischemic stroke
