Progesterone is a naturally occurring steroid hormone, not a peptide. Micronized (bioidentical) progesterone is a form commonly used in hormone therapy. In menopausal hormone therapy it is combined with estrogen in women who have a uterus to oppose estrogen's effect on the endometrium and reduce the risk of endometrial overgrowth.
