Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the ACTH(4-10) fragment, developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is proposed to act by upregulating BDNF and NGF and modulating dopaminergic, serotonergic, and cholinergic systems, with downstream neurotrophic effects that are described as outlasting its very short plasma half-life. Mechanistic work in animal models also points to reduced excitotoxicity and oxidative stress in ischemia.
