VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide)
Also known as Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide · Aviptadil (synthetic form) · VIP nasal spray
Vasoactive intestinal peptide is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid signaling peptide with roles in vasodilation and immune modulation, including downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines from immune cells. Its synthetic form (aviptadil) has been studied intravenously and by inhalation in lung conditions such as ARDS. In wellness settings it is used as a compounded nasal spray, often in the context of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS), a diagnosis that is not broadly accepted; the FDA has noted insufficient data on its safety for chronic use.
Studied / used for
- Studied for anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects
- Investigated (as aviptadil) for acute respiratory distress syndrome
- Used in some compounded protocols in the context of chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS, a diagnosis that is not broadly accepted)
- Studied for vasodilation and pulmonary conditions
Commonly reported side effects
- Flushing and lowered blood pressure (vasodilation)
- Diarrhea
- Nasal irritation with nasal-spray use
- FDA has flagged insufficient safety data for chronic use
